Christmas Tree Lamentation

Greetings from an old friend
in these busy days before Christmas...

Christmas Tree Lamentation

In the forest stands my mother
And wonders where I've gone
At the neighbour's stands my brother
And here stand I alone

Oh stupid man, what have you done
A prosthesis for my foot
A Christmas-tree-stand, a ridiculous one
Where instead should be my roots

What a nonsense I hear, what a big desolation
"A nicely decorated tree"
Knick-knacks, tinsel and illuminations
And a marzipan pig on me

The nicest decoration though it is
Being dressed in ice and snow
Adorned with marzipan pigs like this
Makes me depressed, you know

My word, it's awfully warm in here
I sweat my needles shed
Shortly I'll not be that fine, I fear
Naked, with a star on my head

Then you will stand like fools and see
With your feet in needle bed
What remains of a beautiful tree like me
- A decorated skeleton instead

Really, I don't belong in here
This isn't funny in the least
Instead I should be with my near and dear
At the Forest Christmas feast

On behalf of the Christmas Tree,
Manah Siksa Devi dasi
